  4. Venice and worked mainly as the court composer in Dresden; influential in
  5. introducing Italian musical ideas (as to vocal declamation, concerted
  6. instrumental writing, etc.) to Germany. His works include the earliest German
  7. opera, Daphne (music now lost); Italian madrigals; Sacred Symphonies, etc., for
  8. voices and instruments; 3 Passions (Matthew, Luke, John), "Resurrection" and
  9. Christmas Oratorios.
