Schutz, Heinrich (1585-1672) German composer who studied under G. Gabrieli in
Venice and worked mainly as the court composer in Dresden; influential in
introducing Italian musical ideas (as to vocal declamation, concerted
instrumental writing, etc.) to Germany. His works include the earliest German
opera, Daphne (music now lost); Italian madrigals; Sacred Symphonies, etc., for
voices and instruments; 3 Passions (Matthew, Luke, John), "Resurrection" and
Christmas Oratorios.
